Meet a little something from today’s vintage event.

It’s a 1937 DKW F7, complete with owner of similar vintage ( I was somewhat concerned that he would get home safely as he was making heavy going of getting out of the car park). As we can see from certain evidence it’s a two stroke.

Power is by this:

690cc of two stroke twin pushing out 20 bhp and driving the front wheels. We note that it’s water cooled but seems to do without a fan. The tank behind the engine is of course the fuel tank. What could possibly go wrong putting it there? Yes, that’s a transverse leaf spring ahead. Let’s take a closer look.

What was that chromed rod above the engine? It was attached to this:

A dash mounted gearlever rather like a Renault 4 or 2CV and for the same reason - the gearbox is ahead of the engine. You proceed by pulling or pushing and turning.

Panel fit was not as we would expect it on an Audi of today - yes, that’s a gap around the window with the door closed.

We may remember vinyl roofs. The F7 appears to have vinyl all round. It’s actually leather on a wooden frame.

Want somewhere to store tools and bit and pieces? Here we go.

Want some more details? Here’s the data plate, which looks rather newer than the car. Note the wooden structure around it.

On a historical note, pre war Auto Union were based in Chemnitz. They didn’t survive after WW2 in their original form and were regenerated in the West and later bought by VW. The factory in Chemnitz produced engines for Trabants and Wartburgs and after the demise of the DDR was taken over by VW. Full circle then.
